The BHS Varsity boys and girls basketball teams had two back-to-back games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of last week. Both squared off against Tifton on Monday, while the boy’s game on Tuesday was cancelled, with the opposing team dropping out due to COVID. However, COVID did not just affect their opponents, as Coach Jeff Page was unable to attend both games, also out sick with the virus. The girl’s coach, Kelvin Cochran, took his place for the boys at both games.
The Varsity girls lost their game with Tift on Monday, 33-57. Detavia Salter led with 14 points; Taralyn Brown scored 7; Angel Peterson scored 4; Kirston Noble, Taniah Register, Anndrea Porter and Courtney Sanders all scored 2.
“They have one of the most respected programs,” Cochran said. “They were just ahead of us in our chemistry. We struggled offensively.”
The Varsity boys managed to win against Tifton, 59-51. Mark Taylor led with 18 points; Ashton Parris scored 12; Dorrian Cooper scored 9; Lathan Levens scored 6; AJ Grant scored 5; Dylun Worlds took 4; Demetrius Chappell scored 3; and VJ Ervin scored 2.
“The boys played in a well contested game,” Cochran said.
Tift had the lead for most of the game, up by 3 with one minute left in the game, until Dylun Worlds managed to score the winning shot.
The next day saw the girls playing against Colquitt, ultimately winning 49-47. Salter led with 20 points; Brown scored 11; Noble took 10; Peterson scored 4; Elexis Warner scored 2; and Porter and Sanders both scored 1.
“We got slated to play against two good teams,” Cochran said. “We easily could’ve given up, but they dug deep and fought. They didn’t want to lose.”
The varsity games for this week have been cancelled, and will be rescheduled for a future date.
